Bone densitometry (DEXA) is a quick, low-dose X-ray scan used to assess bone mineral density and evaluate the risk of osteoporosis. This information helps guide diagnosis, monitor treatment, and support overall health management. In addition to measuring bone strength, we also offer analysis of body composition, including fat mass, lean muscle mass, and visceral fat.

-
DEXA requires minimal preparation. Please avoid calcium supplements for 24 hours before your scan. Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners if possible. If you have recently undergone imaging involving contrast (such as a CT scan with contrast or a nuclear medicine study), please inform our staff, as this may affect scheduling.
Before starting the procedure, we ask all our patients to complete a questionnaire to assist in generating your results.
-
DEXA scans involve very low levels of radiation—significantly lower than standard X-rays or CT scans. The test is considered extremely safe, and adverse effects are rare. Our practice adheres to strict imaging protocols to ensure radiation exposure remains as low as reasonably achievable.
-
DEXA is recommended for individuals who:
Are at risk of osteoporosis due to age, menopause, or family history
Have experienced fractures from minimal trauma
Use medications that affect bone density (such as long-term steroids)
Have chronic medical conditions associated with bone loss
Are interested in detailed body composition analysis for health optimisation, weight management, or athletic training
-
During the scan, you will lie comfortably on the padded DEXA table while the scanner arm moves slowly over the body. Our radiographer will position you carefully to ensure accurate and reproducible measurements. You may resume normal activities immediately after the procedure.
Body Composition Scan
Our DEXA technology also provides highly accurate body composition analysis, measuring fat mass, lean muscle mass, and visceral fat with exceptional precision. This type of assessment is valuable for patients interested in health optimisation, weight management, or tracking changes during training or rehabilitation. A referral is not required for body composition scans—you can book directly with our clinic.
